Public Speaking DONT"S - 5 easy tips to be a successful Public Speaker

Mar 22, 2023

Introduction: For many people, public speaking is an intimidating task. But it doesn’t have to be! Being a successful public speaker takes practice and preparation. Here are some tips on what NOT to do when you’re in the spotlight. If you follow these guidelines, you will find yourself becoming more confident and successful each time you take the stage.

1) Don’t Use Filler Words: Filler words such as “um,” “uh,” or “like” can distract from your message and make it difficult for your audience to stay focused on what you are saying. When speaking publicly, try to pause instead of using filler words so that your listeners can take in your message without being distracted by unnecessary words.

2) Don't Ignore Your Posture: Your posture is important when it comes to projecting confidence while speaking publicly. Make sure that you stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart and keep your arms loose at your sides. You should also maintain eye contact with your audience instead of looking down or away from them. This will help keep their attention on what you are saying.

3) Avoid Memorizing Your Speech Word for Word: It is tempting to memorize every word of your speech word for word but this can be detrimental if something unexpected happens during the presentation. If you memorize every single word, then it may be difficult for you to adjust if something goes wrong or if the audience has questions or comments that require improvisation. Instead, focus on understanding the overall flow of your speech and memorize key points so that if anything changes or goes off course, you will still feel comfortable continuing without having to rely heavily on a script.

4) Don't Panic If You Make A Mistake: Mistakes happen, even when we feel prepared! If something goes wrong during the presentation, don't panic - take a deep breath and move forward with confidence. Chances are nobody noticed but if they did, acknowledge it briefly and then move onto the next topic confidently without dwelling on the mistake too much - this will show the audience that you can handle any situation with grace under pressure!

5) Don't Strive For Perfection: Perfectionism is not necessary when it comes to speaking publicly! The goal should not be perfection but rather authenticity and connection with your audience - so don't strive for perfection but rather strive for connection with those who are listening!

Conclusion: Public speaking doesn't have to be intimidating - in fact, it can be quite enjoyable once you get comfortable with being in front of an audience! By avoiding these common mistakes, you will find yourself becoming more confident and successful each time you take the stage! Keep these tips in mind so that next time you're up in front of a room full of people, they'll leave feeling inspired by what they heard rather than disappointed by mistakes made during the presentation! Good luck out there!
